Bambusa multiplex 'Golden goddess'
Common name: Golden goddess
This is a tropical
bamboo with a thick, clumping
habit. It is probably the least hardiest of all
the
Multiplex clumping bamboo that we grow.
Though it is supposed to hardy to 12fº-15fº,
we've seen ours take three nights of 9fº, plus a
week of solid freezing and still come back up
from the roots, though much slower than the
others.
We do mulch our Multiplex heavily with
leaf material in the late Fall. New culms appear late in
the Spring. We treat it almost like a perennial
here in our garden, along with our Hardy Banana and
Gunnerra. In the inland valleys of the Pacific
Northwest, it usually grows to about 6'-10', unless given
ideal conditions. It makes a great screen or
hedge. Any of our Bambusa multiplex would make a nice
addition to an interiorscape.

Spacing:
Giant Running bamboo:
#1, #2, #3 containers 4'-5' o.c.
#5 and #7 containers 5'-10', o.c.
#15 container
8'-10', o.c.
Smaller growing bamboo should be planted
closer, to fill in faster. Dwarf
bamboo in #1 containers
can be planted as close as
12"-18".
Clumping Bamboo:
Most clumping bamboo can be planted 5'-8' apart, o.c.
Soil:
A well
drained, loamy soil is ideal for most bamboo.
With non water types of bamboo,
good drainage is
essential, to avoid root rot. Add organic matter to
amend
the soil if necessary. Bamboo is a heavy
nitrogen feeder. Remember
that fresh bark can rob
nitrogen as it decomposes.
