Bamboos - Clumping - Bambusa Multiplex 'Alphonese Karr'

Bambusa multiplex 'Alphonse Karr'

(bam-BOO-suh MUL-tih-pleks)

Common name: Alphonse Karr

We just love the culm color on this plant.  It has

some of the most colorful colored culms of all the

bamboo we grow, that's probably why we are

always sold out of it! It's
golden culms have green

pin striping throughout, mixed with some pink/red

culm color when grown in full sun full sun.

Makes a

great hedge,  screen.

Height x Diameter: 20'x.5"

Minimum temperature:

Hardy to 12ºf-15ºf, although we have seen over night winter

temperatures as low as 5ºf.  Normal winter damage on all of our

Bambusa is "die back" to the ground level.  We heavily mulch with

organic leaf matter in the Fall.  Each year ours come back and grow

taller and more full than the previous year.  We treat all Bambusa

as a perennial here.

Soil:

A well drained, loamy soil is ideal for most bamboo. With non water

types of bamboo, good drainage is essential, to avoid root rot.  Add

organic matter to amend the soil if necessary.  Bamboo is a heavy nitrogen

feeder.  Remember that fresh bark can rob nitrogen as it decomposes.
